There are millions of tips out there on how to fly with kids, what to bring on camping vacations, which suitcase to buy, where to go and what to see in just about every corner on Earth. What I want to share today is something a little different – something that we discovered last summer during a family hike in the Appalachians.

I'm an English instructor at a Southern California community college. On a great teaching day, I help students write and make the class time fly by regaling them with stories of my poor college writing habits. On a bad day, I torture my students with horrifying writing examples, including references to my college years, and discussions of readings that invoke yawns and texting friends. Usually, it's the former...I think.
